As an experienced professional architectural color consultant, I can’t imagine using just one brand of paint.
Practically speaking, it is not possible to work with national and international clients and specify just one brand of paint because access varies. Some brands have limited distribution and are strictly regional. And just because a brand may be widely available, that doesn’t mean there’s a store in every neighborhood – your neighborhood. Here’s what you need to know in order to shop smart for paint.

Thanks for all the great feedback on the previously published Pantone Colors of the Year infographic. Received several requests to convert Tangerine Tango to popular paint brands. We’ll start with Benjamin Moore, first in the series. More color matches in more brands to come. Pin It
This is a good example of how LRV, Light Reflectance Value, plays a part in the energy savings equation. In very basic, stripped down terms lighter colors reflect more energy from the sun than darker colors. The original roof sealant was a medium gray with an estimated LRV of 40-45. The new, bright white coating has a LRV of 90.
Stay tuned for easy-listening Bursts of Color in which I detail the seven points that are critical in color design for interior and exterior:
“You have to define expectations, identify tolerances,
evaluate proportion of space, observe natural light,
inventory artificial light, and LASTLY consider
permanent, semi-permanent, and transient elements
that reside in the space or on the structure.”

Instructions for this raspberry painted sofa is just one of many talents that has made MAGNAVERDE online legend. Copy of instructions at end of this post.
What paint brands do professional color consultants use and recommend — and why? Diane S. emailed chat@colorpodz.com and asked about paint brands. Here’s the scoop:
In this ColorPod post we identify about twenty different brands. You can listen in as we discuss the ups and downs of specifying mainstream brands as well as what it’s like to work with higher price-point luxury brands.
In a previous ColorPodz, I mentioned some strips of paint color chips seem to be neatly organized from darkest to lightest while others are comprised of colors that relate and harmonize, but don’t quite look like a literal stepping down in scale.
In this quick Burst, I talk about two commonly used collections of colors from Ben Moore as examples, Classic Colors & Color Preview.
