Are you a good designer?

I am a good designer.

I know that.

And I got over it — and myself — years ago but I do have an observation or two to share.

In every designer’s career they reach a turning point. That pinnacle is the day you wake up and without conscious note, design has become a reflex. What used to be items on your to-do list transform into things you just know how to do.

The evolution is due to experience and paying attention while it accrues. Or, let me put it this way. You don’t have your head up your ass while working. You’re not just going through the motions required to whittle down that to-do list. You are present and engaged even for the most mundane tasks.

How that reflex develops is through your choosing to be involved not just employed. Opportunities to experiment and learn are found in the smallest of design tasks requiring the most basic solutions. It is the seizing of those opportunities that will build your arsenal of innovative design know-how. Can be a lot of work. But worth it because it is the fundamental learning of basics like proportion, scale, and perspective that will give your imagination and creative abilities wings. And authority…. and credibility… and confidence.

Pixels of color or wide open spaces, fonts or furniture you know what to do. And if you do not immediately know what to do, you can bet your ass (sans head) that you know how to figure it out and get it done. Solo or as part of a team.

You no longer hesitate to deliver honest critique because you know, when properly shared, your opinion can provide momentum and direction to those who have neither.

The foundation built of design principles and basic fundamentals guarantees you know what to do and how to do it. You can count on a finely-honed eye and an instinctive reaction to solve the challenge at hand. Beautifully. Tastefully. Artfully. Soulfully.

So.  Why are you still sitting there reading my blog?  Go.  Shoo.  Get up and go design something — anything.  And pay attention.

“You no longer hesitate to deliver honest critique because you know, when properly shared, your opinion can provide momentum and direction to those who have neither.” Exactly. After all, this is what clients pay us for.

While taking a short break from “designing something…” I finally got to read your post and the comments. Really enjoyable, Lori, and said so well in your uniquely entertaining, pointed, and informative style. You always come up with a thought-provoking subject, so Thanks…and to the “commenters,” Thanks also! This has been fun, but…OK, back to the Really fun part! Designing…Many things.

Feedback

Feedback from my Color Budz Thanks you guys!

"Surely the next step is eBooks?! Lori has written enough to fill tens of books (and then some, I'm sure) and she is the expert's expert: people will pay for this. I would/will. In fact, if you were to ever do courses, I believe I would fly over to the States to attend. You are both fantastic writers and I, for one, am gripped." —Heather Jenkinson, November 15 at 3:31am

"I just like the style you took with this article. It isn't every day that you discover something so to the point and enlightening."

"I have been looking around colorstrategies.net and actually am impressed by the terrific content material here."

"I simply needed to let you know that I have been enjoying what I have seen and I look forward to reading more."

"I love how you use color on your blog. Using that many colors in a logo or on one page can easily scream cheesy. The way you have used a lot of colors looks fun and classy. Very tasteful and it's obvious that you are a color pro."

"I call Lori the “color scientist” because she’s incredibly knowledgeable about all things related to color and paint"—Ellen Kennon, Full Spectrum Paints

"... And by the way, I thoroughly enjoyed your articulateness, erudition, and devotion to your profession."

"This cast was so informative and helpful. I have been reading color theory books, but to have all of the community and knowledge for a week away will be so helpful to grow in the color world. Thank you for making this series! I can't wait to hear more!"
